On
the 29th of January, at 20:00h, the official opening of the temporary
exhibition " Lights of Sepharad " will
be held in the Archaeological Museum of Murcia.
“ Lights of Sepharad ” includes several of the most important
archaeological pieces found in the old Jewish quarter of Lorca,
together with some original documents from the Archives of Lorca
and Murcia, facsimiles from the National and General History Archives
of Simancas and some pieces from the Roman period coming from the
Municipal Archaeological Museums of Cartagena, Águilas and
Puerto de Mazarrón.
These items and documents are distributed
in five different sections according to the five topics on which
this exhibition is organised: Jews in Spain, from their origins
to the expulsion; Lorca, a border town; The fortified Jewish quarter
of Lorca; Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights; and The Synagogue of
Lorca.
Among the pieces on display in this exhibition, the most
outstanding ones are some fragments of the plasterworks decorating
the Aron
ha-Kodesh in the Synagogue, twenty glass lamps which used
to illuminate the building, tiles, coins and ceramics representing
daily life in Late Middle Ages, various fragments of Hanukiah, and
oil lamps used in the festival of Hanukkah.
