Assembly hall of the Municipal Archaeological Museum in Murcia.
The remains of a Jewish quarter uncovered in the precincts
of the Lorca's castle in 2002 constitute one of the most
important Medieval finds in Spain . This archaeological
complex is formed by some housesand a synagogue, where
some decorative elements have been preserved as well as
the glass lamps used to illuminate the building.
The
finds from the archaeological excavations are on display
in an exhibition named “Lights of Sepharad”,
which will be officially open on 29 January 2009.
A congress
on Medieval Jewish archaeologywill also be held in Murcia
,providing a forum for researchers and experts who are
currently working in the Jewish archaeological field.Since
this is a recent field of research, this congress will
enable the exchange of information, experiences and new
methodologies to be used.
Archaeological
research, through the documentation and analysis of materials
and together with written sources, plays an important
role in the better understanding and knowledge of many
aspects of the customs and daily life of Jews in Middle
Ages; domestic and religious architecture, burial archaeology,
urban planning, layout of Jewish quarters…
The initiatives led
by different institutions and authorities have made possible
the disseminationand promotion of the Jewish heritage in Spain
, recognising the importance of this long-forgotten cultural
legacy. |
